Exploring Search Engines

The web pages listed in the search results of the four search engines were almost all the same, despite being in different orders. There were much fewer search results from Mamma than from the other search engines. While Google had 322,000, Ask.com had 231,000, and Windows Live Search had over a million, Mamma had only 25 search results. When planning a web-site, appropriate meta tag keywords and descriptive web page titles must be identified. In order to find these, one may choose a descriptive word or phrase which is likely to be used to find the web site, then cross reference the word or phrase with other search engines to find out how many results are found, and how similar the sites are to the site you are building. If the sites are similar to yours then that is a good indication that the meta tag keyword is successful and those who are trying to find your site will be able to easily using a search engine. However, if the search results turn up sites that are completely unrelated to your site, then a new meta tag keyword and descriptive web page title should be tested using the same method.
